From its inception in 1992 through 2014, Haptics Symposium used a single-track podium presentation format to promote mutual understanding and collaboration among our attendees, supplemented by a growing number of poster presentations. In 2016, we made a big change to better accommodate the ever-increasing submissions of technical papers and hand-on demonstrations.

Starting in 2016, all accepted technical papers at Haptics Symposium are presented in either single-track or dual-track podium sessions that do not overlap with demo sessions. At the same time, we introduced a new track of paper submissions, Work-in-Progress (WIP) papers, which emphasize the novelty of the research over the completions. These improvements are in line with the changes made at WHC 2015 (a joint endeavor between our conference and the EuroHaptics conference), which were very well received by the attendees.

In 2018, we are adding a new submission category called Cross-Cutting Challenges (CCC), a set of sessions that bring researchers together to focus on interdisiplinary challenges that call for united solutions from the haptics community and beyond.  The CCC sessions replace workshops and tutorials, take place on the first day of the conference, and are included in conference registration.

Also new in 2018, authors of articles recently published in the IEEE Transactions on Haptics (ToH) are invited to present their work during the Transactions on Haptics Poster Session.  This is a great opportunity for journal authors to engage with other scientists and reach a larger audience.

The 2018 Haptics Symposium solicits original, high quality submissions that are relevant to all the scientific, technological, and application aspects of haptics in the following five forms:

Haptic Symposium's scientific, technological, and application areas include:

  • Haptic interface design and control
  • Tactile displays
  • Sensors and actuators
  • Human-computer interaction
  • Multi-modal systems
  • Virtual and augmented reality
  • Haptic rendering and modeling
  • Embedded haptics
  • Teleoperation
  • Shared control and collaboration
  • Robotic manipulation
  • Physical human-robot interaction
  • Human haptic perception
  • Neuroscience of touch
  • Haptics in industrial and commercial applications
  • Other innovative applications of haptics

Questions about technical papers can be addressed to the conference co-chairs at chairs@hapticssymposium.org.

Questions about demonstrations can be addressed to the demos and exhibits co-chairs at de@hapticssymposium.org.

Questions about WIP papers can be addressed to the WIP chair at wip@hapticssymposium.org.

Industrial exhibits are also valuable contributions. The demos and exhibits co-chairs (de@hapticssymposium.org) will gladly respond to any inquiries.
